Alumni Update: Marie von Hafften

It’s great to hear MOJ is going strong!

In May, I graduated from Whitman College with honors in Anthropology and completed an awesome year being the photo & video editor at the Whitman College Pioneer.  This July I went to Romania to excavate a Roman fort and spent a month traveling solo to Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Germany. Now, I’m back in Alaska volunteering for Bean’s Café, an organization that connects people who face hunger and homelessness with food leftover from corporate and school functions.

“Art and Harmony”: Khadija Zizi Strikes a Balance in Solo Art Exhibition

Khadija-Zizi

By SERENITY BOLT

Khadija Zizi began creating her bold, dynamic artwork in 2000, when she took a painting class and never stopped. Since then, she has refined and explored both her craft and themes: travel, motherhood, and the balance found between harmony and discord.

Her contemporary abstract expressionist work expresses emotion through dynamic shape and color, inviting the viewer to resolve conflict through visual experience.

Zizi’s paintings are a striking meditation on the material aspects of form, color and texture as well as a literal and metaphorical journey through culture and archetype.

Have just moved to Berlin, and have spent the past couple weeks readjusting/finding somewhere to live.

What I have been up to: graduated from U of Michigan this past year, went back to the MdS in May (without Jackie this time, as she was still in school and I had graduated in December…it was really weird without her :/ ). While there I shot footage for GQ Magazine; one of their models has his own video blog called “Jogging with James,” so I spent the race this year following him.

I moved to Berlin, Germany at the beginning of this month to continue to freelance photo/video, and hopefully make it financially 🙂 A couple weeks ago I shot the Germany vs.

Since MOJ Spring 2013 I did a reporting internship at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Here’s a link to a story I worked on while there: http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/local/region/families-in-pittsburgh-region-waiting-hoping-for-syria-relatives-to-join-them-698903/

As of now, I’m finishing my senior year at the University of Michigan and applying to internships/fellowships/jobs for when I graduate..

All best,

Jacob

I graduated from UNC in May and am in D.C. working for high school sports at the Washington Post. I’m a part-time news aide and freelancer covering Maryland high school football and field hockey. Most of my stuff for them is on allmetsports.com, or searchable here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/newssearch/search.html?st=%22jacqueline+kantor%22&submit=Submit

Hope all is well with the program!

This summer I was fortunate enough to be a multimedia development intern for Bering Land Bridge National Preserve in Nome, Alaska. As there was no permanent multimedia specialist at this park, I was pretty much in charge of designing and carrying out all multimedia projects for the park. Over the course of summer, I produced several youtube videos, informational posters for the visitor center, social media and blog posts on backcountry trips and junior ranger programs, and was published in Alaska Dispatch, a regional Alaskan news source (http://www.alaskadispatch.com/slideshow/photos-orcas-hunt-gray-whales-coast-nome). Additionally, my image of the Serpentine Hot Springs area of the preserve was chosen as the 2014 Passport to Your National Parks passport stamp for the Alaska/PacificNW region.

her-report

2013 has been a busy year for former Student Journalist AnnaMarie Houlis.

Since MOJ, she’s interned at MediaBend Capital in New York City, publishers of both LifeStyleMirror.com and ElizabethStreet.com, writing primarily for the travel sections. AnnaMarie is currently Editor-in-Chief of The Gettysburgian at Gettysburg College and is keeping herself extra busy building her own women’s news and travel blog, HerReport.com—an international, interactive platform that communicates undisclosed stories of women around the world. Anna writes “the inspiration came from my travels in Morocco and, in fact, the kickoff article on Her Report is the story I investigated during my time there.”

HerReport.com is still in the developmental stages, but AnnaMarie plans to travel post graduation to focus solely on her blog.

Post-MOJ life consists solely of the exciting and intimidating package deal that is senior year. I am currently applying for a Fulbright grant in Morocco and working with Islands Magazine as a digital editorial intern, embracing my inner travel journalist. I’m eagerly looking forward to the adventures of this year and post-graduation!

Alumni Update: Allison Shirk

October 5, 2013 By Admin

Currently I am studying journalism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and I just started working in the Education Abroad office on campus. I get to do web design for our school study abroad website, and I help plan and prepare for study abroad fairs and conferences on campus. It’s great to be able to use my time abroad to motivate other students to consider doing the same.

After living in Morocco, I have a newfound love for world travel and travel writing.

Upon graduation in May of next year I hope to combine both of these interests into a fulfilling career.
