In further sign of detente, Israel attends anti-terrorism conference in Morocco

Lede: In yet another indication of warming ties between Jerusalem and some Arab countries, an Israeli official this week actively participated in an anti-terrorism conference in Morocco.

Key background: In a joint statement released Thursday, participating countries and organizations acknowledged “the ever-changing threat posed by al-Qa’ida” and listed several principles to help promote “collective cooperation by participants to employ a comprehensive approach against the ever-changing and evolving al-Qa’ida threat.”

Morocco reports 2nd coronavirus case

Lead: Morocco on Thursday confirmed its second case of COVID-19, the virus that has spread to 79 countries since it surfaced in Wuhan, China last December.

Morocco Stockpiles Green Tea Imports from China

The Latest in Language Confusion: Morocco Switches Back from Arabic to French

The following article was written by Rachel Berets, an alumna of the SIT: Field Studies in Journalism and New Media fall 2019 semester.  Her piece was published in Al-Fanar Media on March 2, 2020.

RABAT—For three years as a young public-school teacher in Morocco, Abdelghani Erraki taught physics and chemistry in French without a hitch. But in 1983, following a wave of Arab nationalism, the Moroccan government decided to change the language of instruction in science, math, and technical classes from French to Arabic.

Erraki was given two weeks of training from the Ministry of Education and was expected to begin teaching completely in Arabic at the start of the school year.

Morocco declares first case of coronavirus

Lede: Morocco has reported its first case of coronavirus as the illness continues to spread across the Middle East and North Africa.

The health ministry said the virus had been detected in a Moroccan man living in Italy who had returned to his home country.

Algerian Foreign Minister condemns Moroccan comments

Lede: Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum said that his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, had made “showcasing actions that often amounted to provocation and insult.”

Key Background: “Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita had strongly attacked Algeria, against the backdrop of its stance towards African countries’ opening of consulates in Laayoune city, which the Polisario Front considers the capital of Western Sahara.”

“Boukadoum added in a joint press conference with the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, on Saturday in the Algerian capital that Algeria ‘does not build its relations with insults.’ ”
